Joey and Jesse Buss have bought a minority stake in the San Diego Padres amid an escalating feud with sister Jeanie Buss over the sale of their remaining shares in the Los Angeles Lakers. The youngest siblings of former Lakers owner Jerry Buss secured around a 5% ownership stake in the MLB franchise through their company Buss Sports Capital. This comes after new controlling owners Kwanza Jones and Jose E. Feliciano purchased the Padres for $3.9 billion in a deal unanimously approved by MLB owners on August 17. The Buss brothers will join the ownership group's advisory board. Joey Buss told The Athletic they are honored to contribute to the future of a team they loved since childhood growing up in San Diego. He emphasized their belief in deepening the Padres' passionate fan connection and building on the franchise's strong foundation.
